Your partner and yourself just found steady employment and are ready to take the relationship to the “next level.” You two decide to move to the suburbs and now need two vehicles in order to make the daily commute. Neither of you have owned a car in the last 4 years. Here are the criteria:
1. Both vehicles must be brand new.
2. Combined budget is $35,000, or you two can do $700 a month in total car payments over 48 months.
3. One of you will be driving 11,000 miles a year while the other will be driving 30,000 miles a year.
Oh, and one more thing....
4. You two have two large dogs and love to hike/bike.
Have at it and good night oppo!

What is a partner?
![]() 04/01/2016 at 22:42 |

The person you split your financial living with. Most likely your mother, but boyfriend/girlfriend, wife/husband, extremely close friend, and so on.

Yep. Don’t have those.

$35k USD = $45,545 CAD. With that in mind;
Honda HR-V: $20,790
Kia Forte5: $19,495
Practical, reliable, and relatively fun.

I see Kia in your future. One can get a Soul, the other a Rio5. Both start under $16k each. The Rio5 gets better fuel economy so it would be best suited for 30k miles/year.

My 2015 Mazda 3 hatch was 20k (touring, manual). I drive more than both people combined in this situation. Gets over 40 mpg with the Eco tires, little under without. Fits my 4 dogs (2 30lb, 1 65, 1 80). Roof racks and bike racks available.

Hey, that worked out really well! Good going!
My US-based goal is to create a situation that supports a leased vehicle. We’ll see if people take that route.

VW Beetle for her (she loves Beetles), and I’d probably take a base stick Outback.

Man you’re getting straight up devious with these but I wouldn’t have it any other way. So... $35,000 = £25,000 which doesn’t leave me much choice to be blunt but here goes.
Nissan Note for £9,995
&
Suzuki Swift Sport for £14,499

That one did exchange rougher than I would have liked. Kudos on still finding a way though! Any good lease deals for 12k miles or less that could bump up one of the picks?

You should refuse to buy new given the immediate loss from the purchase price.
1- Jetta Sportwagen TDI $10-15k
2- Jetta Sedan TDI (mk5) $7-10k
3- Kuat Transfer2 -$284
4- Curt Hitch <$250
5- Yakima cargo box $400
6- Wispbars (Chinese knockoffs) $120
7- a couple of fat bikes...

The Nissan actually since that is exactly what my sister is doing but I was just short of a base Fiesta ST so I decided to just own it outright.

Urgh missed #1. I was going to say that is pretty close to us - #4 was 2 large dogs and baby, so we have an x3 and 540iT...

European microcars are perfectly suited for this challenge.
Here is a well-equipped Renault Twingo Dynamique, 90 hp, manual transmission, five door to fit big dogs, all for $18517.68
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Here is a just as well equipped Peugeot 108 five door, 82 hp 5 speed, nice shade of navy blue, all for $17270.48
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Total: $35788.16
If I had settled for less well equipped versions it could have been under $35k, but who wants a French hatch without any options?
